As part of our efforts to connect youth and kids around the world and to create awareness among them about the actual issues that affect us at a local and global level, Relief 2.0 is having two video conversations via Skype with 6th grade students at César Chavez Preparatory School (better known as Chavez Prep) in Washington, DC.
The activity is part of their Geography class and is coordinated by their Geography teacher, Peter Marsden, Brigham Kiplinger, curriculum coordinator, and Cathy Healy, Adjunct director of Journalism Studies. Cathy is an old friend who does amazing work as Digital Storyteller and as National Geographic Intelligent Travel contributing blogger. She was also a colleague of mine at the Reuters Digital Vision Program at Stanford University and the one responsible for getting me hooked on e-books by giving my first Kindle three Christmases ago. ;-)
The video conversations will extend the curriculum coverage of radiation pollution in their Geography class. Previous to the conversation, the students have researched and discussed the topic in the classroom. They watched the Chernobyl Heart video documentary and they are also being provided with the following links to incite their curiosity and motivate them to ask questions:
